“Good value but only if you get a reduced rate”

St. David's Hotel and Spa

13 Aug 2008

Myself, partner and 23 month old daughter stayed here on 10 August for one night at a cheaper rate of £145 for an executive room.

There are numerous positive aspects to this hotel, however, there are a few areas where they need to improve, particularly considering this is a five star hotel.

Contrary to a recent review, there was no kettle, or tea/coffee facilities in our room, unless it was incredibly well hidden!

The breakfast, for a five star hotel, was not as good as breakfasts I’ve had in some Premier Inns. They had run out of sausages, the vegetarian replacement wasn’t so pleasant. The porridge, and the scrambled eggs were inedible. In addition, there was not a huge choice of continental items. However, the bacon was good, thick and tasty, and the pastries were fresh.

The curtains in our room could have done with a wash, and the base of the bed was scuffed and grubby-looking.
The toiletries were on the meagre side considering the five star status.

Some of the furnishings in the public areas of the hotel are a little tired, however, I understand the hotel is due to be refurbished soon.

The positives are:

The location on the bay, and the nearby bars/restaurants, the surrounding area has a great vibrant feel.

Our room was a good size, and was on a corner, with dual-aspect floor to ceiling windows that gave the most fabulous view of Cardiff and the marina.
There was complimentary bottled water.
The bed was Queen-sized and very comfortable.
The bathroom although small, had a good shower.

The staff were all professional and friendly, and were quick to help when needed.

The Spa was pleasant and very clean, although there is not a steam room. A sauna will be opened in September 2008.

There is a resident’s lounge on the first floor with carefully chosen books (very nice touch), and a lounge for the spa with complimentary hot and cold drinks.

The hotel car-park is charged at £8 for 24 hours, but included in this is a valet service from the Concierge, who wore top hat and tails (nice detail).

The architecture of the building is stunning.

I would stay here again, but would not want to pay much more than £145 unless the hotel made the suggested improvements.

“Perfect Location & View - hotel needs refurb though”

We stayed in the Castell Conwy suite on the 7th floor as a treat. Booked six months previously so got a deal but not cheap.

The view was stunning and the design of the hotel and room was great.

The spa was good fun for my daughter and her cousin and us.

The surrounding attractions and restaurants were excellent. Ate at the Italian - Signor somebody's, Gilbeys and Gourmet Burger - all good and visited the National Assembly and Milennium Centre.

So we enjoyed it but would only go back after it has been refurb'd. There were some issues - like the claustrophobic breakfast room and the overheating of the room in sunlight, but the staff made us feel very welcome and frankly we weren't there to complain but to relax.

“No luxury at this 5 star hotel”

I do not know the criteria for gaining five star status, but I could see no way this hotel could fit the criteria at all, there was not one hint of luxury about it. Our room was very grubby with cheap carpet which was heavily stained, stains on the cheap sofa bed, which was covered in a cheap (yes that word again) throw..no proper shower and a very grubby bathroom. I did complain and got the feeling they got a lot of complaints...they moved us without any fuss to a suite, but this was not really much better, much bigger but still grubby and still no luxury. The bathroom was dark and the shower/wet room once used for showering left the floor with about half an inch of water everwhere so going back to the loo or the sink meant splashing through the wet. The breakfast was fine but we were sat so close to the tables on either side it was impossible to speak privately, and others conversation however quite was clearly heard, very uncomfortable. I would have been disgruntled had I been in a two star hotel and paying £60 per night but to pay almost £200 I think is awful....I would never use this hotel again, or the group for that matter...Principle Hayley.

“Extremely disappointing......”

St. David's Hotel and Spa

10 Jul 2008

There is no way the room we stayed in at St David's could be classed as 5 star. There was stained curtains, light fittings in the bathroom that were broken and you could see into the void above and there was even old grout on the tiles in the bathroom that had not been wiped off and had dried permanently. The room was small with a tiny TV that was not even flat screen and no tea or coffee making facilities. The staff in the hotel bar were extremely rude and were unable to even provide coffee at 9:30 pm despite having a coffee machine behind them. The stay was just very very disappointing and ruined our anniversary. My husband sometimes visits Cardiff for work and stays in the Mercure Holland House Spa which is 4 star but he said the standards are so much better than St Davids and cheaper, we wished we had stayed there. I think St Davids believes the view makes up for all the tattiness of its hotel, it definately does not!

This is a 5 star hotel and foolishly I did not read any reviews before booking. This hotel is not worthy of a 3 star AA rating.
Our 'de luxe suite' was diabolical.A huge stain on a cheap and worn out couch.Very dirty and stained curtains. One wall is floor to ceiling glass and although we closed them each time we left the room housekeeping opened them both days and therefore while we were out all day the room had heated to greenhouse temperatures....and the days had only been partially sunny!!.The air con is totally inadequate. The bedding was appaling...a double bed cheap throw type that didn't even cover the grubby base of the bed. This was all mentioned to the housekeeping manager...and yet they still didn't even clean the bathroom floor which was dirty on arrival. They didn't replace the used shower cap ....but they did take the used one away !!Only half of the bar order from room service arrived .Dinner was cooked perfectly but it took over 2 hours to be served a 3 course meal when the restaurant was quiet.TV was inaudible and maintenance had to come to fix it....No bottle opener for mini bar wine.....had to send down for one.....used glasses taken away and not replaced next day.....Shall I go on ?????
Also BEWARE if you want to cancel a reservation or check out early they only accept 48hours notice......We can see why....people are obviously going there and probably all wanting to go elsewhere once they see what it is like.
The icing on the cake was our checkout bill which was totally incorrect and £98.00 over what it should be.The reception staff were lovely at all times...The bill was corrected....they had no reciepts for the weird and wonderful phantom additions !!! I feel sorry for people on the desk...they must be getting a lot of flak but they are doing thier best.We moved on to the Marriott in Cardiff.....only a 4 star...but wow! what a difference !!!
