Myself, partner and 23 month old daughter stayed here on 10 August for one night at a cheaper rate of £145 for an executive room.
There are numerous positive aspects to this hotel, however, there are a few areas where they need to improve, particularly considering this is a five star hotel.
Contrary to a recent review, there was no kettle, or tea/coffee facilities in our room, unless it was incredibly well hidden!
The breakfast, for a five star hotel, was not as good as breakfasts I’ve had in some Premier Inns. They had run out of sausages, the vegetarian replacement wasn’t so pleasant. The porridge, and the scrambled eggs were inedible. In addition, there was not a huge choice of continental items. However, the bacon was good, thick and tasty, and the pastries were fresh.
The curtains in our room could have done with a wash, and the base of the bed was scuffed and grubby-looking.
The toiletries were on the meagre side considering the five star status.
Some of the furnishings in the public areas of the hotel are a little tired, however, I understand the hotel is due to be refurbished soon.
The positives are:
The location on the bay, and the nearby bars/restaurants, the surrounding area has a great vibrant feel.
Our room was a good size, and was on a corner, with dual-aspect floor to ceiling windows that gave the most fabulous view of Cardiff and the marina.
There was complimentary bottled water.
The bed was Queen-sized and very comfortable.
The bathroom although small, had a good shower.
The staff were all professional and friendly, and were quick to help when needed.
The Spa was pleasant and very clean, although there is not a steam room. A sauna will be opened in September 2008.
There is a resident’s lounge on the first floor with carefully chosen books (very nice touch), and a lounge for the spa with complimentary hot and cold drinks.
The hotel car-park is charged at £8 for 24 hours, but included in this is a valet service from the Concierge, who wore top hat and tails (nice detail).
The architecture of the building is stunning.
I would stay here again, but would not want to pay much more than £145 unless the hotel made the suggested improvements.
