We stayed at the Lincoln House hotel for 2 nights in May 2008. There are 3 basic things I'm looking for during a short stay: a comfortable bed, a decent shower and a good breakfast. The Lincoln House scores 2 out of 3.
The king size bed was a little on the soft side but gave a refreshing nights sleep. Plenty of pillows and high quality bedding.
The full cooked breakfast was pretty good. Service was quick, polite and they were happy to cook things to order. The welsh cakes were a welcome bonus too!
The only real let down was the shower. The cubicle was small and the temperature/pressure depended more on whether the shower was running or the toilet flushed in the room next door than on the shower controls. The plumbing might well need updating, perhaps unsurprising in a property of this age.
One other minor niggle: they seemed a bit short-staffed during our stay. I had to fetch the breakfast waitress from the kitchen (who doubled up as receptionist) when we needed a taxi. She'd disappeared again when it was time to leave and hand our key back. Lucky we'd already paid!
We weren't given a key to the front door, being told that the desk is staffed 24/7 and that we just needed to ring the buzzer to be let in. Both nights the buzzer didn't work and nobody could be seen at the desk, so we had to resort to our mobile phone to summon somebody to be let in. Having said that, the service was unfailingly polite and friendly.
If you'd appreciate staying in an independently owned period property in a good location and can put up with the slightly antiquated plumbing, you could do a lot worse than the Lincoln House.
