We stayed here for 3 nights, having booked and received a good price for a "deluxe double room". I had wanted to stay here since delivering a training course a year previously in the Captain Scott room of the hotel, and was impressed by the public areas at that time.
The hotel has so much going for it- the location is fantastic, it is a stone's throw from bus and train stations with the NCP car park around the corner. It is a five minute walk to the castle, and an even quicker walk to the excellent restaurants and bars in the Brewery Quarter, so much so you can happily wear "car to bar" shoes for your night out. Try the Spice Quarter, Thai Edge and Bali- all wonderful places to eat.
The Captain Scott room where we had breakfast the first morning is very impressive and the reception and bar area are spacious and airy. The decor is modern and everywhere is clean. It should be perfect in every way- it isn't, because you get the feel of extreme penny pinching going on for everything.
On arrival the lift to the reception was out of order and a sign proclaimed there was no date for the lift to be fixed. Why not? There was just no way you could stay here with mobility problems but there was nothing on the hotel's website about this. Fortunately we are able bodied but beware they are 49 (we counted) steep steps in 5 flights, not fun with even the smallest amount of luggage.
Check in was fine, pleasant receptionist. We had asked for a room as high up as possible as we knew that St Mary's Street can be noisy given the amount of bars. We were on the 7th floor and the room was very quiet at all times. We had 3 windows which did not open but there was air-conditioning which could not be adjusted to lower than 19 degrees. When we arrived it was a very warm day and the air con had been turned off so the room was very hot and stuffy, it took a while for it to cool down.
The website had promised a cafetiere, and bathrobes, neither of which were there. The safe was locked shut. There was one handtowel, one bathtowel and a bathmat in the bathroom. There were 5 tiny jars of toiletries, none of which were replenished throughout our stay. I have no idea what was the difference between the double and the deluxe. The bed was very comfortable but we had to ask for an extra pillow as the ones provided were very flat.
In fact the housekeeping was very hit-and-miss- one day you would get 4 towels, one day one towel. If we had started asking for things that were missing we would never have stopped. One day you could not even tell they had been in- the quilt on the bed looked just as we had left it.
The safe was sorted out quickly and cheerfully.
So was the toilet paper that we ran out of, housekeeping having left us with a very small amount.
The bathroom is very modern but the extractor fan is not very effective, so much so there is quite a bit of black mould on the bath and between the tiles.
The shower is terribly erratic- sometimes it would cut out completely while in use.
The internal lift was working and was very efficient.
Breakfast the first day was in the Captain Scott Room. When we entered there were no servers to be seen. There were yoghurts and cereals and cold meats and cheese, croissants and muffins. The fruit juice dispensers every morning had about an inch of juice in. Once an item was gone, it was never replenished and this was an hour before the end of breakfast. We asked for 2 coffees and got 1 coffee and 1 tea. 2 racks of toast arrived, and we enjoyed our breakfast the first day. The second day it was a farce- there was no bread or bread rolls, we asked for toast but the server forgot our order, it was a struggle to get another cup of coffee, on each morning a woman in a suit came in and rearranged the remaining items but did not put any more out, just tried to make the buffet look bigger than it was.
The servers were more concerned with clearing away the tables than with actually serving the guests.
On the third morning we just didn't bother, we got our breakfast from Starbucks across the street.
One was left with the impression that what was done was the minimum possible acceptable, which was pretty poor as it is by no means cheap to stay at this hotel.
Overall, we did enjoy our stay, but with a little more care and less penny pinching this hotel would be great.

Arrived Friday 9th May for Birthday celebrations. Lift was out of order so had to climb about 50 stairs to get to reception, Room was okay. Bathroom was better. Flat screen tv. Safe wasn't working. Bed made badly. Went for breakfast on Saturday morning and had full english at extra cost of £4 which to be honest was well worth it. Shame they didn't continually fill the orange juice dispenser as i was a little parched!!! The lifts weren't fixed during our stay and in fact another internal lift broke whilst we were there. It got a bit much towards the end constantly going up and down those stairs but to be fair the receptionist was lovely and so was the night manager. Not the best hotel i have stayed in and not the worst. If i was to return to Cardiff I would check out the Angel hotel nearby as it had parking included and or the Holiday Inn or Hilton.

“A good stay”

The Royal Hotel

Stayed in The Royal Hotel on the 1st May 2008 for a Birthday treat. We booked a double executive room and paid £20 more that than what you would pay for a standard room.

We checked in at about 14.30 with no problems, our room was ready and clean to a good standard. It was on the 4th floor with a double bed, TV and DVD player. We were a bit dissappointed in that our room only had a window high up which was tiny, this did make the room dark.

However we settled down and found everything to be comfortable. As mentioned in previous reviews there was no bath robes, however we mentioned this on our way out to dinner and was assured it would be dealt with.

We arrived back in our room after a night out to find out that this had not been sorted, however after a phone call we were then delivered the promised bath robes.

I feel that this is a good modern hotel in a good location, it would benefit from providing a full English breakfast and more attentive staff but on the whole our stay was enjoyable and i would go back.

“go deluxe double!”

Business trip in Cardiff for two days and needed a hotel, booked The Royal and then read some reviews.. was a tad concerned! But after staying there really can't understand why I'd seen so many bad or average reviews.

Perhaps the key was I got a deluxe double on the 5th floor at a half price deal.. book very late (I booked same day) and you can probably get the same rate unless summer I guess.

The Deluxe double was a nice big size (probably twice the size of your standard living room), leather sofa at bottom of bed to watch the flat screen tv with dvd player (which was nice touch).. my room was kitted out to a reasonably high standard with modern fittings but with an element of style..flooring not carpeted so can give cold feel but I like like feel anyway, bathroom pretty large and the bed was gorgeous for comfort.... service isn't fantastic but its okay, as with most hotels these days its staff hail from half of europe but pleasant enough.

Breakfast room okay size and the buffet style reasonably basic - although table signage suggests the waiter/waitress will attend your table and see if you want the full english etc - it never happened on either of the two mornings I was there so proactive staff a tad lacking.

One thing I can agree with on other reviews - don't expect your bathrobe - there aren't any!

Situ in the city is great - right next to the stadium and pefect for the shopping experience if you want that...also Cardiff's hard rock cafe is directly opposite which was great for me when I wanted a decent fast food meal.

The hotel front is squeezed between a few bars so I imagine it could get a bit loud which if you were lower in the hotel may hear overspill (but I had complete silence from my floor)... plus walking late night will having weaving between the younger crowd going in and out and hanging around outside - may put some off - hotel has this unique second floor reception.. the first floor as far as I could see was nothing more than a waste of space - you can take lift or stairs to second floor - the lift is blind when you go in as down the corridor and right.

Only major issue I had was finding the place... travelling in by car means you struggle to get to the door due to unigue one way system for cars and there is no hotel parking so its NCP 5 mins away for £12 a day.

All in all I'd certainly stay there again if I could get a good deal - if I had probably paid full rate for my deluxe then you might question the value and could probably get more for your money out of town but you're paying for the location as well as the actual hotel.

“A grand old dame beaten to within an inch of her life by modernity”

This was a romantic surprised arranged by my husband so it was a lovely evening.

I've been looking forward to staying at this hotel for a really long time, ever since i heard it had reopened i've been dying for an excuse to stay there so i was very excited by the surprise.

I grew up in Cardiff and remember going to the Royal Hotel when i was young. I remember it was beautiful but very tired and in desprate need of a makeover. Over the last 20 years Cardiff has changed a lot and this hotel finally got a makeover, but not the one it deserved.

A large chunk of the old hotel is now 'Edwards' the bar next door and you can see the granduer of the old hotel there, but you can't see it in the hotel.

You can enter the hotel from the front or the back, but neither leads directly to the reception and you have to go up a couple of floors.

Check in was easy, the receptionist was friendly and efficient, although it took some time to establish there was a room ready.

The room is nicely decorated but it was a bit rough around the edges, the paint was peeling around the window and the walls were a bit grubby (always a danger when you paint a room white).
The selection of tea and coffee was good, the bathroom was clean and the toiletries nice, although the tissue box only contained one tissue stuck out of the top to make it look full, very odd.

The bed was comfortable. The hairdryer was in the wardrobe and attached to it which was a pain.

The most important feature of this hotel has to be the location, it's right in the centre of cardiff, walking distance to all the amenities and a short taxi ride to the bay.

Breakfast was fabulous, continental is included in the room price or £4 extra each for full english. There was a lovely choice in the continental so we didn't bother with the English but if you wanted it it was cooked fresh. It was served in an old dining room with stunning wood pannelling, the only hint of the grand dame the hotel once was.

Check out was quick and easy.

I would stay here again but there are better hotels in Cardiff for the same money.

It's just a huge shame that they covered the old beauty with modern features that don't really work instead of restoring the original features.
